Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs)

GEARS will now be hosting WAGs each semester.

Turn “I should be writing” into “I just finished a chapter!”

Graduate writing can often feel like a solitary journey, but it doesn’t have to be. GEARS is proud to facilitate Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs) to help you find your rhythm, overcome writer’s block, and cross the finish line alongside your peers.

What are Writing Accountability Groups?

What: WAGs are voluntary, peer-led groups facilitated by fellow UMBC graduate students. They aren’t “critique groups”; instead, they are dedicated spaces to focus on the process of writing.

Who: Each group is composed of 4–8 graduate students who are committed to developing sustainable writing habits and maintaining peer accountability.

Why: The goal is to develop the habit of writing every day for short, manageable periods. By setting weekly goals and being accountable to your WAG peers, you’ll find it much easier to stay on track with your thesis, dissertation, or research papers.

When: Groups meet once a week for 60–90 minutes over a 10–12 week period. Your specific group will find a weekly time that is mutually convenient for all members.

Where: You choose! Groups meet in person on campus or online via WebEx or other videoconferencing platforms.
